William Pong

William Pong, 92 of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on June 19, 2020. William Pong was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended the University of Cincinnati where he earned a Ph.D. in Physics. He joined the faculty at the University of Hawaii and was a physics professor from 1960-1997. His research was in experimental solid state physics. He started the solid state physics courses in the department and taught upper, lower division and graduate level courses for 37 years at UH. He authored over 40 articles in international science journals and obtained several patents. He was an avid scientist with a brilliant mind and was always seeking explanations about the world around him. He is predeceased by his wife June, brothers George and Henry, and sisters Pauline and Minnie. William Pong is survived by his brother Jobic, sister Mamie, his children Kathleen Pong Sugarman (Hart), Alice Pong O'Donnell (Michael), Milton Pong (Pauline), Vivian Pong Dicksion (Matt), and grandchildren Max, Alia, Kiera, Natalie, Rocket, Dash and Jet. He will be missed for his quiet good humor, inquisitive mind, and unfailing support of his family. Celebration of Life will be on Saturday June 18, 2022, at Diamond Head Mortuary from 10:00am-12:00pm.
