My wife Ruby and I were happy to have known and been friends with Phil a little over 10 years, since about 2010, in association with his leadership of the prostate cancer community. I was pleased to have succeeded him in the Hawaii Prostate Cancer Coalition in 2010, attended several Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) conferences on the mainland, and nominated him for the Harry Pinchot Award in 2013. Without a doubt he was not only a leader in what he believed in, a wide ranging leader in numerous endeavors, including the Peace Corps, the Honolulu Marathon, and as a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, but also as a warm, caring individual. Although not one of us is destined to live an eternity, we were very saddened on learning of his passing at age 90.
Coincidentally, we were friends with his first cousin, B. David Swenson who also lived in Hawaii but passed away in 2006. Phil truly lived a fulfilling life among his friends and community and our condolences to his relatives in the U.S., and in Norway and his executive assistant Melissa Totherow. May he rest in peace, joining his beloved wife, Gail.

I was very sorry to hear that Phil had passed away. I was a guest at his home in Kahala many years ago and it was my best visit ever to Hawaii. We had lunch when I was last there in 2012. He was a an excellent person I will miss him. Happy landings.

Phil was our close family friend for 55 years. I worked closely with Phil in the Philippines and in Hawaii. No one was more dedicated to the Peace Corps and its' mission.
Phil was with us when our two sons were born and developed and visited frequently over the years. He was such a presence it is difficult to imagine this planet without him.
We will always miss him.

Mr. Olsen and I shared two common interests: our service in the Peace Corps and our passion for aviation. We swapped many stories about our flying adventures and Peace Corps Volunteer experiences. I'm grateful for his service to our country and his early leadership of the Peace Corps.
For the last several years, Mr. Olsen was a member of National Peace Corps Association's Sargent Shriver Leaders Circle, the honorific designation for individuals who provide the financial leadership for our mission. I'm very grateful for his wise counsel and generous support.
