Mr. Kawamura was one of the first teachers to work at Mililani High School in 1973.
His name is a combination of Allan and Dennis. Those are the two names his parents wanted to name him. He was my English teacher in 1987 when I was a sophomore. He would show a documentary in his class entitled One More Season. It was about Charlie Wedemeyer. Charlie was Mr. Kawamura's classmate in high school at Punahou. I really struggled through every subject in high school. Charlie was a man who suffered from Lou Gehrig disease, but he became a successful football coach because of his disability. I was born with cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair, so I could relate to Charlie's story.
When I was a junior I entered the Shakespeare contest at our school. I was not the best at reciting or understanding Shakespeare, but he was proud of my effort. I struggled in math and science. I even struggled in his class, but I worked hard and I passed. He gave me hope that I could make something of my life. I provide social services to people who have developmental disabilities. I also started performing in plays in 2012. Mr. Kawamura will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew him
