Allan Yap's Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan “Marko” Yap, who departed from us on August 3, 2024, at the age of 76. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on April 19, 1948, Allan’s journey through life was as vibrant and dynamic as the island of his youth.
From his early days in Honolulu, where he attended Kapalama Elementary, Dole Intermediate, and Farrington High School, to his academic pursuits at Linfield University in Oregon, Allan’s path was marked by a deep commitment to education and a passion for life. He dedicated 50 years of his life to teaching, with a distinguished 30-year tenure at McKinley High School. Allan was not only a teacher but a coach, guiding young athletes with the same dedication he brought to his own pursuits in football, baseball, and golf.
Allan’s love for sports and the outdoors was evident from a young age. He was a proud member of the historic Farrington High School State Championship football team of 1966, and his achievements in track and field set him on a path to college sports at Linfield. His enthusiasm for physical activity continued throughout his life, from spearfishing and hiking to golf, which remained a cherished pastime until his final days.
Beyond his athletic endeavors, Allan had a profound appreciation for music. A self-taught musician, he started with the saxophone but played guitar with an infectious passion. His involvement in various bands and jam sessions brought joy to many and created lasting memories. His love for music was matched only by his dedication to his family, which was the true heart of his existence.
Allan was a man of many interests. He rode motorcycles with the Sons of Hawaii motorcycle club, enjoyed playing chess, and pursued a deep interest in history and military battles. His craftsmanship and “jack-of-all-trades” spirit made him a DIY enthusiast, always ready to lend a hand or offer guidance.
But above all, Allan was an optimist with a sharp sense of humor. He approached life with a no-nonsense attitude and a grateful heart. His love for his wife, Frances, and their family was unwavering. He took pride in his children and grandchildren, celebrating their successes and offering support with genuine joy.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Frances Yap, and their four children: Paul Yap (and wife Verlynn), Chelsey Tupuola (and husband Poni), Russell Yap (and wife Gina), and Gabrielle Wright (and husband Ben). Allan also leaves behind a cherished group of grandchildren—Kristian-Allan Yap (and wife Angelica), Alexis Tupuola, Gino Yap-Tupuola, Kingsley Tupuola, Caitlin Yap, Zoelin Yap, Isla Yap, and Erick Wright—as well as great-grandchildren Angel Yap, Kainoa Yap, and Aniyah Wright.
He is also survived by his Sisters Roxanne Murakami (Husband Glenn), Colleen Lunasco (Husband Keith) and Susan Chun (Husband Doug). To whom he loved very much.
As we remember Allan, let us celebrate the incredible life he lived, the joy he brought to those around him, and the lasting impact he made on all of us. His spirit, humor, and love will continue to resonate in our hearts, and his legacy will live on through the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Allan “Marko” Yap. Your journey was extraordinary, and you will be deeply missed.
