Andrew Pung's Obituary
Andrew John Wah-on Pung (“Andy”) was born on December 11, 1952 at Kapiolani Maternity Hospital, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was the second of four children and first son of Benny and Edith (Lee) Pung.
As a child Andy was musically and athletically talented, playing the accordion (even performing on local talent shows on tv), Little League baseball and basketball for his Church’s youth team. He attended Waikīkī Elementary, Kaimuki Intermediate, Kaimuki High School and UH Manoa.
During High School Andy played the drums in the marching band and while attending UH he was the drummer in a “Chicago-like” band, the “Morning Good”, performing at Military Clubs on Oahu and at outer island venues.
When Andy was a senior at Kaimuki High School he met classmate Wendy Suzuki who would eventually become his best friend. After graduating in 1970, their friendship grew, they attended UH, got married in 1975 and subsequently had two wonderful daughters, Tara and Kelly.
While he was not attending UH classes and playing the drums for the Morning Good, Andy worked as a Gas Attendant/aspiring Mechanic at Stan’s Union 76 gas station on the corner of Kalakaua and Monsarrat Avenues. This was the beginning of a 57-year career as an Auto Mechanic that went through Piikoi Union 76 Service, Oka’s Transmission Service, Morikawa’s Union Service, Andy’s Texaco (and Arco) Service, and eventually ending at Andy’s Car Care Service on Democrat Street in Kalihi.
Being a small business owner since 1985, Andy met so many wonderful, faithful customers, many who became good friends. Business associates he met over the years also became good friends. He always made himself available to whoever needed his help. Many times he went above and beyond for his customers ensuring that their cars were safe and repaired to their satisfaction.
Andy is survived by his loving family: wife Wendy, daughters Tara (Bryan) Simpliciano and Kelly (Bronson) Matsuoka; grandchildren A1C Haylee Tamayoshi (USAF), Sage Simpliciano, Austyn Simpliciano and Chiara Doyle; step-grandchildren Daven(Ivy )Kahikina-Simpliciano, Taylor Simpliciano, Kaylee Simpliciano, Naomi Eugenio-Matsuoka, Madison Matsuoka, Max Matsuoka and Mikayla Matsuoka; step-great grandchildren Daeson and Miley, sister Myrna Pung, brother Philip Pung, many Cousins and his furbaby dog Lexie Pung.
