I had the privilege of knowing and occasionally caring for Bridget during the last years of her life. Just walking into her presence elicited an inner flutter of eager anticipation and prompted a giggle of delight as she repeatedly drew me into her fun-loving, light-hearted and delightful presence. One Christmas I observed the entire family as we all drew in to enjoy the marvelous touch of her inner light and love.
One memorable memory Bridget repeatedly reminded me of was when I visited her at the Rehab of the Pacific Hospital. While a nurse was assigned to help Bridget practice getting in and out of a car in preparation for her discharge the next day, Bridie was convinced that she was going home THAT day. Even after much anxious coaxing and vexing on the part of the helpers, Bridget would not leave the car. While she sat impenetrable, I came in and said something which she miraculously interpreted as me saving the day! She readily took my hand and arm and I accompanied her back to her room!
Another favorite memory was last July when I cared for her through the night. I remember joining her while she “chair danced” in impeccable rhythm to Frank Sinatra’s singing and accompaniment. I tried to capture her joy in movement and her effervescent smile on my iPhone and while re-viewing this year, I noticed that it was 4am...joy through the night!
Bridget’s favorite talking topic was all of you; her children and grandchildren. We would read all of your cards, letters and show case of gifts over and over while she pointed out your pictures surrounding her, letting her know that all was perfect and right in the world.
Thank you Bridie for what you gave us all!
