Fredrick Collison
My name is Fred Collison and I was on the faculty at the TIM School for much of his deanship there. I have so many memories of Chuck that it is hard to know where to start. I was originally recruited in 1979 (as a result of a recommendation by Dr. John Hazard of Michigan State University, who served as a Research Professor at UH's College of Business). I was unable to accept the offer at that time, but applied again in 1982 and Chuck generously extended the offer again, for which I am eternally grateful as my 23 years there were probably the best ones of my life. Chuck was a very kind to me and other faculty members and provided excellent career guidance. Whenever i encountered difficulties in my academic career, Chuck was very helpful. i don't think that I could have asked for a better dean to work under. Chuck had a vision of the importance of the travel industry throughout Hawai'i and the Pacific Basin that was forward looking. He also had a vision for the TIM School in providing for the implementation of that vision for faculty, staff, and especially students as well as many members of the industry. All of Chuck's awards speak to the esteem in which he was held throughout the travel industry and elsewhere.
I only wish I could be at the memorial service, but unfortunately I am unable to travel to Hawai'i as I am scheduled to make a presentation at Bryce Canyon National Park next week and that cannot be changed. I send my aloha to all of his family and the ohana that knew him and now celebrate his passing and legacy.
