Clarice Patricia Levin's Obituary
Clarice “Clare” Patricia (Hattenbach) Levin, 100, passed away peacefully on her much loved island of O’ahu just past midnight on Monday September 5th.
She is survived by her son Wayne Levin and his wife Mary Belanger, and her daughter Beth Levin. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Michael Levin and his fiancée Jennifer Graves, Shaina Evoniuk and her husband Adam Theis, Kai Evoniuk and Elise Noelani Levin.
Clare’s beloved husband of 70 years, Melvin “Mel” Levin MD preceded her in death in 2014 as did her beloved son Dr. Larry Levin. Her beloved grandson David Brian Levin preceded her in death in 1991. Her beloved daughter in law, Olivia Padilla Levin preceded her in death in 2021. Clare was also predeceased by her brother Bertrand Howard Hattenbach.
Clare was born on March 17 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of Benjamin Hattenbach and Bertha Dorothy (Harris) Hattenbach. Her family relocated to Los Angeles in 1929. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School and went on to study music at UCLA under the the tutelage of Arnold Schoenberg. She graduated from Stanford University class of 1940.
Clare played piano and loved classical music, attending concerts throughout her life. She was also very involved in art, most specifically ceramics. Clare and Mel travelled extensively to many parts of the world, with Japan being one of Clare’s very favorite destinations. They moved from LA to Honolulu with daughter Beth in 1967. They also spent several years in the 70’s living in Honaunau on Hawai’i Island where they enjoyed gardening and snorkeling. Clare also enjoyed playing tennis, skiing trips with the grandchildren on the mainland, as well as astronomy. Mel and Clare became very active in their local astronomy club later in their lives and developed many dear friendships within their astronomy community.
Clare lived a very long and very remarkable life. She will be remembered and missed by many.
