Daniel Q.H. Lau, devoted husband and father, was born in Canton, China on April 17, 1933. He passed quietly at 85 on December 6, 2018, 10 days after the passing of his loving wife. Daniel was one of seven siblings of Lau Tin Hoo and Siu But Moi. After marrying Helen in 1957, Daniel, his mother and youngest surviving brother journeyed to Honolulu, Hawaii to join Lau Tin Hoo and begin their quest for a better life for their family. Helen joined 18 months later and together they raised a family. They have been sweethearts for more than 60 years and rarely left each other’s side. Helen and Daniel owned and operated restaurants in Honolulu for decades, beginning with Liberty Chop Suey in 1979 on South King Street, to Hong Nien Chinese Restaurant in Kalihi and finally Helen’s Chinese Food on Kapahulu, before retiring in 2006.
Helen Lau, with her big engaging smile, will be remembered for her generosity, charming humor and motherly demeanor. She was a strong support for anyone who had the honor to feel her embrace. Daniel Lau, quiet and thoughtful, was like the distinct, delectable dishes he created: one of a kind, unique and inimitable. His brilliant passion for his art delighted and inspired countless others. Daniel and Helen are survived by 4 children—Emily Lau, Steven (Lop) Lau, Alvin (Calisa) Lau, and Juliana (Karl) Kasberg, 8 grandchildren, Daniel’s brother Lionel Lau, and Helen’s brother Ken Po Yeung.
