I miss Granny! I miss family holidays in Aina Haina. I miss all the noise, the ukulele playing, singing songs with Papa, my cousins and the Easter Egg hunts, the raw egg toss and the goofy but practical prizes Granny gave us. I miss being able to drop-in any time, any day, just to say hi. I miss her stories of Wailua. I miss her beef stew, stuffed cabbage, pork chops, grape juice ice cubes, and of course the best malasadas (period). How she managed to keep her yard and home impeccable like June Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver), I’ll never know. I don’t miss scratching her arms and legs -for sure. I don’t miss scrubbing the bathroom sink everyday after school and rushing to catechism every Wednesday. One thing for sure is that the things I didn’t like doing were small steps that taught me to be responsible and that while I might not like doing those things, they were necessary steps in life.
I hope Granny has found her happiness again with Papa and together, their light will shine as bright as the day they first met - with excitement and anticipation of never being separated again.
