Flaviano Navares Sagabaen's Obituary
Flaviano “Felix” Sagabaen was born on October 5, 1931 to Felipe and Remonda Navares Sagabaen in Wailuku Maui, Hawaii. Felix was the first of 4 children. He was raised in Pu’unene, Maui.
He attended Pu’unene Grammar School and continued his education at Baldwin High School and graduated in 1952.
He married his wife, Esther on December 27, 1952 and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last December.
Felix started his cooking career in Kahului, Maui, at the Maui Palms Hotel. His fame as a cook grew when he worked at the Kahala Hilton Hotel in 1964. He also worked at the Miramar Hotel as a cook from 1977. He retired from both jobs in 1995.
He was also devoted to God and served as a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Honolulu. His talents to serve the Lord went beyond cooking, which was a true passion of his. He also sang in the choir, and received and award for “Father of the Year.” Felix was an avid musician and singer, and passed his talents on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Esther, of 61 years; daughters, Debbie Davis, Jessica Kaniho, Kanoe Barker and (hanai daughter) Anne Hoshida (Lloyd); sister, Maggie Shimabukuro (George); Brother, Tony Navares (Henrietta); 9 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
