Flora Thong's Obituary
Flora Lum Thong, 95, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025. She was born to David and Beatrice Lum in Honolulu on July 25, 1929, an hour before her twin sister Laura. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1947, Flora attended the University of Hawaii and graduated with a B.S. degree in Dietetics, and later attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she obtained a Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition. In 1954, Flora was hired as a Public Health Nutritionist for the State of Hawaii and retired as Chief of the Nutrition Branch at the Hawaii State Department of Health after 36 years of service. Flora was a member of the Hawaii Dietetic Association, American Dietetic Association, Hawaii Public Health Association, American Public Health Association, Chinese Catholic Club, Associated Chinese University Women's Club, Hawaii Nutrition Council, and the Association of State and Territorial Nutrition Directors.
Flora was married to her husband Kenneth for 63 years. Travel and entertaining were among their favorite pastimes, bringing them much happiness.
Flora is predeceased by husband Kenneth and sisters Laura Lum and Leonora Hiu. She is survived by many generations of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life for Flora will be held at Diamond Head Memorial Park Chapel on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 with visitation at 9:30 a.m., and service to begin at 10 a.m. A memorial mass at St. Philomena Catholic Church will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., followed by inurnment at Diamond Head Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of gifts, donations may be made to St. Philomena Church and/or your favorite charity.
