When I moved to Honolulu in 2001 I had the privilege of living next door to John. We were close friends. It is with great sadness to learn of his passing. In May 2003 after an injury at work I moved back to Texas. I met "Big John" at the Honolulu Park Place condo, downtown Nuuanu sometime around 1991. We used to get together often to shoot pool, 8-ball, along with Walter Kop. We enjoyed the competition and the camaraderie. We saw Big John a couple of times after he moved to the other side of the island, but we kept in touch with cards each Christmas. Hi! May name is Allyne Merrell, We live in Austin, TX. I am John's classmate from Star of the Sea School. Our son Allyn went to school with Willard and William. John was a dear friend of ours and we stayed in contact with each other through the years. We had class get-togethers and when he was able to come he did. We will miss him. I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope God's promise found in the Bible at Revelation 21:4 may bring you some comfort. There it says - "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." Imagine, a time in the future when we can welcome back those we love from the sleep of death, to a world free of pain and all things that cause tears of sadness.
