Lucille A.L. Chun's Obituary
Lucille Alice Lo Chun
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and teacher died October 27, 2020 at the age of 74, after an unexpected, brief illness.
Born in Honolulu on December 30, 1945, Lucille was the daughter of William Y.C. Lo and Alice Lau Lo, a middle child between her brothers Robert and David. Lucille grew up in Kuliouou and graduated from St. Andrews Priory in 1963. She graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor’s in Education.
While her husband of 54 years, Dr. Kenneal Y.C. Chun, was in medical training, Lucille raised a young family of four children in Denver, Colorado; Portland, Oregon; and Agana, Guam, before returning home to Honolulu in 1977.
After successfully raising children, Lucille, a trained educator, naturally advanced to teaching at Ala Wai, Aina Haina, and Hahaione Elementary Schools, retiring in 2002. She expanded into teaching Chinese exercises, first being Luk Tung Kuen, then Tai Chi. It is with the latter that she found one of her true passions. She combined a friendly and encouraging teaching style with a determination to do her best for her students. Lucille taught several Tai Chi classes a week for over a decade.
An early adopter of technology as a teaching and communication tool, she connected family, friends, and Tai Chi enthusiasts around the world via email, her website at everydaytaichi.org, YouTube, and ʻOlelo TV programs. Lucille’s facility with technology allowed her to make Tai Chi accessible to thousands, in addition to the hundreds she taught directly. She launched her website everydaytaichi.org in 2009. As the webmaster, Lucille posted to her blog and created new content daily. Her website exemplified her zeal and approach to healthy living. Lucille also maintained an active YouTube channel, focused on Tai Chi, that has over 2500 subscribers from around the world. In 2014, her first Tai Chi program aired on television on ʻOlelo Community Media, and Lucille went on to win the award as the “Rookie of the Year” at ʻOlelo. Later, she and husband Kenneal were honored as top producers at Olelo for their numerous hours of volunteer time producing Tai Chi programs for the benefit of the community. In 2018, Lucille was featured in the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s “Young at Heart” column. Her incredible media presence is a lasting chronicle of her life.
Lucille was the hub of her family network and will remain in her family’s hearts forever. She is survived by her husband Kenneal, children Caroline Chun (Joel Young), Stuart Chun (Rita Kong), Clarissa Kang (Franklin Kang), Leslie Chun (Susan Lin), grandchildren (Justine and Brennan Duan, Aaron and Ethan Kang, and Mia, Ami, Andrew, Sophia, and Colin Chun), and brothers Robert (Louise) Lo and David (Diane) Lo.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to ʻOlelo Community Media at olelo.org in Lucille’s memory are welcomed.
