Michael Steven Ottoson's Obituary
With much sadness, Michael S. Ottoson passed away on January 18, 2026. He was 77 years old. He said “goodbye” to people he loved.
During his life time, he had many achievements which we are all proud of. After graduated from University of Hawaii with a BA in Psychology, he went to work at Toyota, Servco of Hawaii. He became a VP after he initiated and managed the Leasing Department. After many years in the automobile industry, he decided to return to college to received his MA in Social Work. He then worked in the Child Protective Service for State of Hawaii. He presented cases to judges to assist in better lives for families and fostering children.
He enjoyed travelling. He visited Idaho, Wyoming and the Tetons. He frequently visited Vancouver and the Vancouver Islands. He also travelled to Japan, Thailand and South East Asia. Visited the Toyota factories.
His favorite past time was fishing. He went to Idaho to learn fly-fishing, catching mainly trout. In the summer, he went salmon fishing at Dolphins’ (Fishing Resort) on Vancouver Island. He often visited his vacation home on Gabriola Island, Vancouver, Canada. This home overlooked a beautiful, peaceful bay, the Silver Bay.
When he became older, he moved his vacation home from Gabriola Island to the Big Island of Hawaii. He enjoyed bringing his two cocker Spaniels there, Sunny and Maile. He loved the view of the top of Maunakea and the Observatory.
He was gifted in writing. He wrote to the “Star Bulletin” and his articles were published. The two articles were on “fishing on Vancouver Island” and “Car Leasing”.
At his retirement age, he became interested in woodcraft and Soap Art. He turned his garage into a work shop. He was skillful, and made many Koa boxes which he sold at the Christmas fairs on Oahu. He also gave these Koa boxes to friends and relatives. He started the Soap Art business with his cousin and sold many beautifully decorated Hawaiian Soap in the tourist areas.
He loved life and lived it to the fullest. We will always miss him so much. May he rest in peace and enter a new joyful journey in heaven.
