Patrick W. Border's Obituary
Patrick W. Border, 75, died recently at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born to Vaughn and Catherine Border on May 21, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, the second of six children. The family moved to Lamar, Missouri, birthplace of Harry Truman, where Pat began attending school.
As the Vietnam War raged, Pat signed up for Air Force ROTC at the University of Nebraska. He earned a BA Degree in 1970, and his Juris Doctorate Degree two years later. After graduation, he began fulfilling his military obligation, joining the Judge Advocate Corps, assigned to an Air Force Base in Seoul, South Korea.
After several years’ service in S. Korea, Pat was transferred to Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii where he completed his final military service and found his future home as a civilian. Honorably discharged from active duty, Pat’s love for Hawaii led him to apply for a post as a prosecuting attorney for Honolulu municipalities. He was hired and soon earned a reputation as a capable trial attorney and was hired by a private law firm.
Pat belonged to attorney organizations based in Pacific Rim countries. Pat especially loved Asia, where he made many lasting friendships in South Korea, India, and elsewhere. His travels and friendships deeply immersed him in Asian culture.
Patrick served numerous roles during his illustrious law career. He was on the Court of Military Appeals as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney; Deputy Attorney General, Hawaii; Deputy Corporation Counsel, City and County of Honolulu; Elected Member, Neighborhood Board, District 8, City and County of Honolulu; Court Certified Arbitrator, Court Annexed Arbitration Program, Hawaii Supreme Court, 1987.
Pat belonged to a host of professional organizations, including the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, Consumer Lawyers of Hawaii, Asia Pacific Lawyers Association, American Inn of Court IV (Barrister). After retiring from serving 10 years as a judge in Honolulu, Pat worked in mediation, serving with Alternative Dispute Resolution (Arbitrator/Mediator, Neutral or on behalf of parties). Military: JAGD, United States Air Force, 1973-1978.
Pat Border was a Charter Member of the Inter Pacific Bar Association and was an active member of the Pacific Rim Lawyers body.
Witnessing the dire circumstances prevalent in many countries where he traveled, he donated to charitable service agencies to help impoverished children. He was fascinated and knowledgeable about American political history and delved deeply into historical political figures of interest, visiting many presidential libraries.
The Border family will hold a private Celebration of Life Service in Patrick’s memory.
