Sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Shimmin. He was a longtime Board member of AFY and consistently supported our work with generosity and heart. He often provided movie passes for our youth to enjoy screenings at Consolidated Theaters.
Because we work with youth gangs here in Hawai‘i, Mr. Shimmin twice closed an entire theater so our youth could attend private showings of Boys in the Hood and Once Were Warriors. Both films opened the door for meaningful conversations and allowed us to bring rival gang members together in a safe and neutral environment where they could share space peacefully. At these events, the youth were also treated to soda and popcorn.
The private viewings made them feel valued — and Mr. Shimmin had a special way of making them feel exactly that.
Mahalo- Rest in Peace Mr. Shimmin
