Sen-Dou Chang's Obituary
Sen-Dou Chang passed peacefully on the evening of November 2, 2019 at Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center. A professor of geography at the University of Hawaii-Manoa for some 40 years from 1967 to 2007, he is survived by wife Angela, sons Stanley and Victor, brothers Zhe Ming, Shao Xing, and sister Le Yi. He was born in Zhejiang Province, China. In his youth, he fled the Japanese invasion and served in the Chinese Youth Army. He graduated from Jinan University in Shanghai in 1949 and relocated to Taiwan the same year. In 1953, he moved to the United States to continue his graduate studies at the University of Florida, University of Wisconsin, and University of Washington. He taught at California State University-Northridge for six years before accepting an offer to teach at UH. During a sabbatical at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1980-82, he met and married Angela Chan of Shanghai. Over the course of his long career, he published many papers on subjects including China’s migrant labor population, the city of Beijing, and China’s historical walled cities. In his free time, he loved playing basketball, bicycling around his neighborhood, and traveling to every province of China. Services will be held at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019, at Diamond Head Mortuary Chapel. Burial will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2019 at Diamond Head Memorial Park Cemetery.
