She started working as a nurse at St. Francis and then ended her nursing career at Halawa Correctional Facility. She was an outstanding nurse and the stories she shared showed how much she loved every person she helped throughout her nursing career
Mama had such a beautiful smile that resonated her entire being. Her smile emanated so much love and kindness and her hands were always so full of warmth and care. She was also a very loving and supportive mom who was always so willing to lend an unconditional listening ear.
There were many moments that when life got rough for any of her children, and comfort and support was desperately needed, all mama needed to do was rub her child’s back and gently whisper to her hurting child, “it’s going to be okay.” “No worries, GOD going take care.” Mama’s simple words and small gestures of love always brought solace and made life a little more tolerable.
Mama was not the greatest when it came to cooking. However, though life was hard growing up and funds were low, mama made even flour, sugar and water, of which she called, “Rubber pancakes,” taste so good. It was not the ingredients that made her famous “Rubber pancakes” taste so good, but it was her love that she poured into the batter that made a poor person’s dish taste so ono and outrageously delicious. As a matter of fact, mama or “Gramz” as her grandchildren called her, shared this scrumptious dish with most, if not all of her grandchildren and everyone who had this dish would always ask her to cook it for them.
Fried eggs, Maruya (Banana Fritters), fried luncheon meat or bologna, and her famous Roast Beef, were all such simple dishes, but the love that mama poured into each dish not only filled our opus (tummies), but it also filled our hearts with all of her love.
Mama loved all her children but her relationship with all of her grandchildren was beyond this world; they each held a special place in her heart. She also had an amazing sense of humor and this was so evident with all of her grandchildren that no matter how much each one of them messed with her, she (Gramz) was always so down to let them do whatever they wanted to do with her, even if it meant doing a Snapchat or an Instagram funny filter. Mama would let them do it and she lovingly with so much laughter, enjoyed it all with them.
If any of her grandchildren asked her to pick them up because they wanted to either go to her house, go eat somewhere with her, or go shopping, of which Costco was her favorite place, she
would find a way to make that happen; she would drive to wherever they were, pick them up and take them wherever they needed to be. Sometimes, she would sneakily take her grandchildren to Costco with her, and what is so amazing, even if it was just Costco, all her grandchildren just loved being with her.
When she visited her grandchildren in the mainland, she would always ask them to take her to Chick-Fil-A; she loved Chick-Fil-A’s sauce so much that she asked if it could be mailed to her, And Praise GOD! Because mama got to enjoy her famous Chick-Fil-A sauce a few months before she went home to be with her LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST.
She was so full of life, joy and humor and many antics. Her antics were expressed in words that only those who knew her understood her crazy language of love. Of her many crazy sayings, when messed with, she would say, “Oh you so cuckoo!” “You Crackahs!” “Oh, so doodoo!”; or if she needed to get your attention right away, she would say, “Ahhh, Akahbuhkah!”
From the time she uttered these crazy sayings till today, her many “Buss Laugh” expressions are still being said and enjoyed by all of her children and grandchildren; and most probably, her great and great-great grandchildren will learn to express and carry-on Mama’s silly phrases well in to the future.
Mama also loved her LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST with all of her heart. While leaning on her SAVIOR’S GRACE and STRENGTH, she lived serving and expressing her SAVIOR’S NAME till her last breath. Wanting to communicate how much her SAVIOR meant to her, with great emphasis before she went home to be with her LORD and SAVIOR, Mama repeatedly said, “I have the mind of CHRIST!” “I have the mind of CHRIST!” “I have the mind of CHRIST!”
This expression of mama’s was shown during her service for her LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. In the church she worshipped at, Mama helped to serve her SAVIOR. And on the many retreats and missions she went on, Mama helped to serve her SAVIOR.
One notable mission trip Mama served at was to Africa. While on this mission trip to tell of and to love on many for her SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST, mama had a few encounters with what are known as in Africa as “Rebels”. These rebels threatened her and her companions’ life with guns, and while fleeing for their life to get to the other side of the border, many of her companions were all filled with fright. However, in her way of being gentle but yet stern, with full confidence and assurance in her SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, Mama said to her companions, “It’s okay. GOD going take care.”
With awe and amazement, her SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST surely took care of mama and all of her companions; they all made it safely across the border; and they all eventually made it back home to share of their experience.
There are many more wonderful, love-filled, eventful stories and moments GOD allowed us to have with our Mama, our Gramz, and if it were to be shared here, it would end up being a novel.
However, the one amazing attribute and life lesson Mama, Gramz gave and taught her family is how to love and forgive. Mama, Gramz, lived an example of love and forgiveness. Whenever any of her family wanted to lash out at the person or persons that brought hurt, Mama always said, “Nevah mind; GOD going take care.”
You and your legacy of love will forever be in our hearts, minds, soul, and our very being, Mama. With the help of our LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST, we will strive to live out your legacy GOD created in and through you. We Love you forever and ever Mama! And until we see you again, fly home to your SAVIOR! Our forever angel, our forever Mama, our forever Gramz. A Hui Hou Mama…A Hui Hou Gramz…A Hui Hou…
