Time period: 1948-1950. "Muscles," my work and bowling mentor during my brief period at Alexander & Baldwin, right after graduation from McKinley High School. What a person? Was single and got married during our association. Bought a surplus jeep though not able to operate the vehicle competently so I was his unofficial driving instructor. Used to reside at Fort and School streets and walked to his house on School St., passed Liliha to meet him and ride shotgun, mostly after working hours and weekends. Competed in Businessmen's bowling league and mountain ball 12-in. softball games against Big Five companies and the traditional BOH, Bishop Bank, etc. Muscles was the hustler prodding me to bowl since I was a southpaw (told me Lefty's are natural bowlers) but never bowled a game but used to set pins manually for $1.00/10 frames in my earlier youth. Our softball games were played at Kapiolani Park after work and the after-game camadarie were something to behold mixing with bosses and fellow workers. And Muscles was right there too competing. Every end of month, our boss Abe Dung, Henry Leong, Muscles and myself had to stay after hours to trial balance the books, etc. and we had a strong relationship because of that. Muscles and I were very close during this period even being 10-years senior. I cherished his friendship and will always remember his kindness and mentoring. Joined the service at the start of the Korean Conflict and left Hawaii. Had no contact with Muscle's since then but will always think of him being part of my life's story. Condolences to the family.##imported-begin##David S. Nishimura##imported-end##
