Many years ago, Bill taught me, an 8 year old at the time, to play chess. Bill and my mom knew each other from SIU Carbondale and were friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was very patient with and kind to a curious kid (me) who always had questions for him about history. He was especially nice to me considering that I was born into a family from Pittsburgh who loved the Steelers. I tried never to talk about about my Steelers' success on the field when Bill was around. In the late 1970s, that was a difficult task! Despite our AFC North team's rivalry, he was a lovely person and was always very kind to me.
I am very saddened to learn of his passing.
