Ira Z. Helfer's Obituary
Ira Z. Helfer, 70, of Honolulu, HI, passed away November 23, 2014. Born in Chicago, Illinois. Ira introduced Chicago Style Vienna Beef Hot Dogs to Hawaii. A generous host, he gave away thousands of "Helfer Dogs" to guests, including at his annual Sony/Hawaiian Open party, featured nationally on ESPN and the Golf Channel. Helfer Dogs were so popular, former President Bill Clinton stopped by to eat them on multiple occasions. There was no limit to Ira's generosity in giving away Helfer Dogs as long as you followed his one rule- Never put ketchup on a hot dog! He was involved in the Water Polo Community in Hawaii and supported Iolani school.
Surved by his wife, Keiko T. Helfer; Sons, Eric J. (Thea) Helfer, Bryan H. (Dawn Taniguchi) Helfer and Paul A. Helfer; 3 grandchildren, Ryenne, Connor and Mia Jane Helfer; sister, Susan Rosner.
Committal Services will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 12:45pm at Diamon Head Memorial Park.
